Classroom Information
supply lists; homework; make-up work; lost or damaged materials
Classroom supply lists are prepared at the end of the school year and are placed in each child’s report card. Families who need supply lists can pick them up at any time in the school year.
Homework is an important part of a child’s overall education. Homework fosters individual responsibility, reinforces student learning and serves as a bridge between home and school. Well-designed homework assignments extend students’ learning beyond the classroom. Homework practices vary among grade levels and teachers. These general guidelines apply:
- there is less homework in grades K–2 than in grades 3-5;
- homework gives experience to students in following directions, making judgments and comparisons, raising questions for additional study and developing responsibility and self-discipline
Parents are asked to discuss daily assignments with students, to encourage their completion and to see that they are returned to school on the assigned date.
Parents are asked to let their children assume the responsibility for taking home the necessary work and to support the child’s effort to become a responsible learner.
Some study time at home each night will help students develop good study habits.
Plan to have your child set aside at least 30 minutes each evening for homework. Find a quiet place in the home for this task.
Have the child complete assigned homework. Encourage the use of a small note pad to keep track of daily assignments.
If no homework is assigned or your child finished his/her homework and has more time available, have him/her spend 30 minutes reading silently, or with others, a book of his/her choice.
Spend regular time, also, practicing basic math facts being studied at school. Make the practice time for both reading and math FUN!
Make-up Work for Student Absence
Help your child take responsibility for seeing the teacher about making up the work missed because of absence. Usually one day for each day’s excused absence is allowed for makeup work.
If parents want to pick up school assignments, this can be done by calling the office by 9:00 a.m. If requests come after 9:00 a.m., assignments will be ready the following morning before school.
We ask that you not drop into the classroom to ask for missed assignments. Classroom interruptions subtract valuable minutes from our children’s instructional time.
Lost or Damaged Materials
Books are provided by the school for student use and normal wear and tear is expected. Students will be asked to pay for classroom or library materials lost or damaged while in their use.
