Theatre Program
wtih guest artist Gretta Assaly
The Objective
- To offer training in the art and craft of theater to students.
- To use the study of theater skills to enhance academic curriculum already in place.
- To create original plays in the classroom situation that illuminate or “bring to life” an aspect of the curriculum. Plays can be based on language arts, history, poetry, or another topic that would be selected in conference with the classroom teacher.
- To put skills of improvisation, voice, and scene study directly to use to rehearse and perform an original production to be performed for the students and their families
The Project
Since the opening of BCES, each and every student has had the opportunity to study theater with guest artist Gretta Assaly, the founder and director of the Children’s Theatre School. Gretta has worked with schools in the Vail Valley and throughout the United States, has directed musicals at the Gerald R Ford Amphitheater for the past ten years, and has worked on the New York television show for kids, “Out of the Box.”
Gretta spends 4 weeks with each class to develop their own play based on material vital to the curriculum. Working side by side with a director from the professional theater gives teachers a unique opportunity in the area of staff development.
After School: Students in Grades 2 through 5 who have shown commitment, energy, time and talent will have the opportunity to perform in an original production. This involvement may take several forms: on stage as an actor or performer, or backstage as a stage manager or crew member. Potential scripts may include those written by Douglas Love for the Children’s Theater School, many of which have been published by Harper Collins.
Conclusion
By participating in the Theater Program, the students will gain knowledge and experience in theater. Some may undertake the first steps toward a career in theater. Others find an opportunity to shine in an activity they enjoy.
The development of confidence and self esteem benefits the student regardless of which career they may choose. By working together on a theatrical production, the students become part of a team where everybody wins.
Theater Programs play a vital part in creating a supportive environment for the young student actors and the audience of the future.
Parent volunteers are welcomed in all aspects of production: helping students rehearse, costume and set work, public relations, etc.
The Luncheon for the Arts, the event to benefit the Theater Arts Program is held annually.
